FAM stands for Familiarization Trip and is defined as follows:
"A trip offered to travel professional at a reduced rate so they can inspect hotels and restaurants and sample an areas attractions and services."
Participating on FAM trips helps us tremendously when selling products to our clients. But remember, as travel agents we are not able to travel everywhere in the world that our clients want to visit so we must learn how to sell destinations we may never have the chance to see! But it sure helps when we have the opportunity to visit destinations, cruise on the ships and do hotel site inspections. Below are some examples of FAM trips that are offered to qualified travel agents:
Royal Caribbean is offering a seven-night Canada & New England Cruise sailing October 22 – October 29. The cruise calls at ports in Boston, MA; Portland ME, Bar Harbor, ME; St John, New Brunswick; and Halifax, Nova Scotia before returning to Boston. Members of the Outside Sales Support Network are offered prices beginning at $389 plus taxes and prepaid tips. Non member-agents must add $25, and non-industry companions add $75.
Departure dates are Dec. 3, 17, 24 and 31; Jan 14 and 28; Feb. 11 and 25; and March 10 and 24. The eight day trip costs $1,600 for agents and $1,700 for a spouse or companion. The single supplement is $300 and hotel upgrades cost $180 per person. The package includes roundtrip airfare between New York and Madrid, hotels, transfers, sightseeing, daily breakfasts, one lunch, and three dinners. Travelers will see Madrid, Cordova, Seville, Granada and Toledo.
Celebrity Cruises is offering a 14-night Alaska FAM cruise sailing September 18 to October 2. The cruise calls at ports in Vancouver, British Columbia, Inside Passage (Cruising), Ketchikan, Alaska, Icy Strait Point, Alaska, Hubbard Glacier (Cruising), Skagway, Alaska, Juneau, Alaska, Inside Passage (Cruising), Seattle, Washington, San Francisco, California, and San Diego, California. Members of the Outside Sales Support Network are offered prices beginning at $499 plus taxes of $419 NCF, $213 port taxes, and $161 in prepaid tips. Non member-agents must add $100, and non industry companions add $200.
